Revisiting a Foundational Voice: Elek Judit in Berlin’s Forum Special
One of the most symbolically charged moments of the 2026 Berlinale arrives through the Forum Special section, which will screen newly restored versions of two films by Elek Judit: Istenmezején 1972–73-ban and Találkozás.
The Forum Special’s curatorial framework, anchored by the motto “Be Human Only, Dish Out the Truth.” and a focus on women filmmakers, makes Elek’s inclusion both historically and thematically resonant. Elek Judit, who passed away in 2025 at the age of 87, was among the first women to establish a sustained authorial presence in Hungarian cinema, working consistently at the intersection of documentary observation and fictional construction.
Istenmezején 1972–73-ban unfolds in a small village in Heves County, observing young women as they confront the narrow set of life choices available to them in socialist-era rural Hungary. The film’s restrained, sociographic approach avoids didacticism, instead allowing structural pressure to surface through everyday decisions. Originally presented with great success at the 1975 Berlinale, its return in restored form underscores Berlin’s long-standing role in shaping the international reception of Hungarian cinema.
Találkozás (1963), by contrast, is intimate and minimal. Shot using cinéma direct methods at the Balázs Béla Studio, the short film follows a single failed date between a lonely man and a nurse. Writer Mándy Iván, appearing as himself, reflects during their conversation: “If we can be together and talk to each other—maybe it’s a big word, but I feel this is the most.” The line encapsulates Elek’s enduring concern with human connection as both essential and painfully fragile.
Together, the two films reaffirm Elek Judit’s position not merely as a national figure, but as part of a broader European tradition of socially engaged, humanist cinema—one that the Berlinale continues to actively recontextualize.
